La Guardia is a unique place where nature meets a new kind of effortless and sophisticated luxury, one that values sustainability and is committed to preserving the island’s unspoiled landscapes, local community, and traditions.
We welcome our guests within the UNESCO MAB Biosphere Reserve “Isole di Toscana,” inside the Tuscan Archipelago National Park – the largest marine park in the Mediterranean – and part of the International Sanctuary for Mediterranean Marine Mammals. In 2022, Giglio Island was recognized among the world’s “Best Tourism Villages” by the United Nations, an accolade celebrating destinations that promote sustainable tourism, preserve culture and traditions, create opportunities for local communities, and safeguard biodiversity.
La Guardia pursues a strategy of social and environmental responsibility aligned with 7 of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) outlined by the UN General Assembly’s 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
Concrete actions to meet the needs of the present generation without compromising those of future generations.
UN Goal 2
End hunger, achieve food security, improve nutrition, and promote sustainable agriculture.
We prioritize local products – such as fish – and those from organic and eco-sustainable agriculture. Our menus are designed with the seasons in mind, focusing on high-quality ingredients and emphasizing their freshness. We also highlight, through a specific partnership, the excellent wine from Fontuccia Agricultural Company, which serves as a unique reference to the island’s agricultural and winemaking traditions, rooted here since Etruscan and Roman times.
UN Goal 5
Achieve gender equality and empower all women.
We promote gender equality in our relationships with all stakeholders. We ensure full and effective participation of women and equal leadership opportunities across all areas of our structure.
UN Goal 6
Ensure availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all.
We monitor water consumption, aiming to optimize it, and encourage our guests to be mindful and respectful in their water use and towel frequency. The water system on the Island of Giglio, unlike many other Italian islands, boasts desalination plants that provide sufficient water for the local communities and beach economy, starting from seawater.
UN Goal 7
Ensure access to affordable, reliable, sustainable, and modern energy for all.
We work to reduce energy use through sustainable resource management, employing passive building systems and technological solutions to minimize consumption. We do not use fossil fuels and generate the necessary hot water for the structure using solar panels.
UN Goal 8
Promote sustained, inclusive, and sustainable economic growth, full and productive employment, and decent work for all.
We implement policies that promote sustainable tourism, create jobs, and promote local culture and products. We protect labor rights in a safe work environment. We carefully select our people, knowing their crucial role in the company’s success, regardless of age, gender, disability, race, ethnicity, origin, religion, economic status, or other factors.
UN Goal 12
Ensure sustainable consumption and production patterns.
We are committed to continuously reducing waste production; we do not use any disposable materials and ensure proper waste separation, educating both staff and guests. In our bar and restaurant, we only use washable and reusable metal straws. We also exclusively use FSC-certified paper (including for toilet paper).
UN Goal 14
Conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas, and marine resources for sustainable development.
We are a “Plastic-Free” establishment, using only returnable or recyclable glass bottles. Not only do we reduce plastic waste that harms our seas, but we also encourage its reuse by gifting guests beach towels made from fabric created from recycled ocean plastic bottles.
